Artwork can increase the aesthetic quality and utility of a public space. The intervention should support the public character of the urban environment both in a spatial sense and in the sense of subjectively perceived qualities. In modernism, art gained an autonomous status. But complete autonomy and artistic freedom might be harmful for the urban environment. When realizing art in public space, political representation, the authors’ personal sensitivity, and the cooperation with the architect, who should oversee the quality of the adaptation, all play an important role.

ERA21 regularly organizes guided walks related to one selected theme of ERA21 of the past year. This year we will focus on the Art of Public Space (see ERA21 #03/2018) and we prepared one walk in Brno and two events in České Budějovice.

On Tuesday, September 4th, we visited the multifunctional building of the Drn in Prague at Národní třída. The excursion was also attended by author of the building Stanislav Fiala, historian and curator Katerina Beckova and architect Yvette Vašourková, who will review the building in the forthcoming issue of ERA21, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak architecture.

Běh za architekturou, horské túry, plavba parníkem, cyklovyjížďky, filmové projekce, workshopy, přednášky a především pečlivě připravené procházky vedené architekty, urbanisty či historiky a příležitost dostat se do jindy nepřístupných staveb – letošní DEN ARCHITEKTURY chystá nejbohatší program ve své historii. Od pátku 28. září do čtvrtka 4. října zamíří do bezmála devadesátky měst po celé České republice a také na Slovensku a nabídne veřejnosti nový pohled na architekturu, která nás obklopuje – od moderních, odbornými cenami ověnčených budov přes historické skvosty až po mnohdy opomíjené, ale o to zajímavější, stavby.

V České republice každoročně probíhájí dvě přehlídky architektury: Česká cena za architekturu, pořádaná komorou, a Grand Prix architektů – Národní cena za architekturu. Obě dvě vrcholí na podzim. Jaký na to má názor Rostislav Koryčánek, historik architektury, kurátor a bývalý šéfredaktor ERA21?
